For our senior capstone project at the University of Michigan School of Information, my team collaborated with the U-M Recreational Sports Department to redesign their mobile app. The original app was underutilized—most users only engaged with basic features like facility check-ins, while higher-value resources such as Group X classes, adventure programs, and the webstore remained largely hidden or inaccessible due to poor navigation and unclear labeling.
To address this, we conducted a comprehensive user research phase that included surveys, interviews, and user testing. Our insights shaped the design of a new, more intuitive app experience that prioritized clearer navigation, improved feature discoverability, and greater user engagement with underused offerings.
We developed a high-fidelity interactive prototype in Figma and concluded the project with an evaluation study, comparing our redesigned app to the existing one. This study validated the effectiveness of our solution—participants completed tasks more efficiently and with fewer errors, confirming that our design better supports users’ needs and enhances their connection to Rec Sports resources. The final deliverables, including the prototype, final report (encompasses research, design, & evaluation), and UX recommendations, were handed off to the Rec Sports team to support future development.
